Michigan native David Barrett penned the tournament’s iconic closing song “One Shining Moment,” which he jotted down on a napkin in a bar in 1986. The song made its debut in 1987, playing over highlights from the tournament after Indiana defeated Syracuse, and it has played after every tournament since. While CBS initially used Barrett’s recording, they’ve used Luther Vandross’ cover version since 2011.
