The Quiz: Which announcer popularized the term “March Madness”?
Brent Musburger
Jim Nantz
Kevin Harlan
Bill Raftery
Though it’s believed that Henry V. Porter first used the phrase to describe the Illinois state high school basketball tournament in 1939, “March Madness” didn’t reach national prominence until announcer Brent Musburger used the term during coverage of the 1982 NCAA tournament. Musburger was inspired by a local car dealership in Illinois that used the phrase to sell cars, and he began to use it himself after he took over tournament hosting duties for CBS in the early 1980s.
The correct answer to this quiz is Brent Musburger.
