So why is this answer correct? : Although early Americans had an aversion to tomatoes, with some believing they were poisonous, others saw their dietary value and, later, their supposed medicinal value. When Americans finally came around to eating tomatoes regularly in the 1830s, Dr. John Cook Bennett promoted the vegetable’s purported medicinal properties, which he said could treat indigestion, diarrhea, and bilious. Bennett concentrated tomato ketchup recipes into pills, selling them as patented medicine. Of course, their universal curative abilities were later disproved.
