The rise of multilateral institutions of global governance like the UN Security Council, the World Court, and the ICC over the last half-century reflects, in many ways, a never-before-seen willingness by the international community to unite in the name of advancing peace and other common interests. At the same time, the nation states that make up these organizations still tend to guard their sovereign rights very closely, and tend to react strongly when they feel those rights have been violated.
Required:
Your task is to select one or more of these organizations and consider how they balance the protection of their members’ sovereignty on one hand with accomplishing their mission on the other. In particular, do you think sovereignty concerns prevent these organizations from being as effective as they could be? Why or why not?
