So why is this answer correct? : Formed in 1207 after the Fourth Crusade, the Duchy of Archipelago was formed by Marco Sanudo, nephew of the Venetian doge. Although the Greek islands changed hands among Italian city-states in the following centuries, the Duchy remained independent until it was conquered by the Ottomans in 1566. The islands returned to Greek control after the Greek War of Independence (1821 to 1829)
