When Gerber held a contest for their brand mascot, artist Dorothy Hope Smith was one of many hopeful participants from across the country. National polls for the true identity of the Gerber baby featured guesses from celebrities and politicians, but Smith finally revealed in 1978 that she modeled the drawing after her neighbor Ann Turner Cook, who passed away in June 2022 at age 95.
