Less than 10 years after the death of Cyrus the Great, Darius I took the Persian throne and ruled for the next 46 years. His successor was Xerxes I, who famously died during the Battle of Thermopylae. Xerxes’ third son, Artaxerxes, ascended the throne after his father’s death. There never was a Persian king named Alexander, though Alexander the Great did conquer much of the region during his time (336 to 323 BCE).
