So why is this answer correct? : On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior. (The event was later immortalized in the 1976 Gordon Lightfoot ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”) Three underwater expeditions have since occurred to examine the wreck — in 1989, 1994, and 1995 — the most recent of which saw teams recover the boat’s 200-pound bronze bell, which is now on display at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
