So why is this answer correct? : Bell System introduced the first electronic push-button phones on November 18, 1963. The new system, which would become the worldwide standard, replaced the rotary wheel system, which required operators to make long-distance calls. There were only 10 buttons on the first touch-tone phones, numbered zero through nine. Extra buttons, including the pound symbol (#) and asterisk (*), weren’t added until later.
