Trivia: Which state flag features a bear?
New Mexico
Missouri
California
Illinois
The correct answer is California
So why is this answer correct? : The grizzly bear that makes the Californian state flag so distinctive is a nod to a revolt that led to statehood — the appropriately named Bear Flag Revolt. Tensions between American settlers and the Mexican government were high in 1846. California was a Mexican territory, but many of the new American settlers wanted to carve a place out for themselves and feared the possibility of war with Mexico. As a result, they preemptively attacked many confused Mexican settlements, raising a makeshift flag featuring a bear, a red star, and the words “California Republic.” In 1911, years after California’s 1850 induction to the United States, the flag was adopted as the official state flag.
