So why is this answer correct? : Unlike other sodas at the time, Mountain Dew wasn’t meant to cure headaches or soothe an upset stomach; it was made to chase whiskey. Two brothers, Barney and Ally Hartman, came up with the lemon-lime concoction in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1932. At the time, the phrase “mountain dew” was slang for mountain-brewed moonshine. The brothers used the name, along with Mountain Dew’s first mascot, Willy the Hillbilly, to play up their new soda brand.
