So why is this answer correct? : The “fig” part of Fig Newtons is relatively straightforward — figs are used to make the filling in these sumptuous cookies — but what about “Newton”? Boston-based Kennedy Biscuit Company purchased the cookie recipe from Philadelphia baker Charles Roser in 1891. The company liked to name its products after nearby towns, and chose Newton, located seven miles west of downtown Boston, for its new treat.
