One of the themes of the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” is to be careful what you wish for. This theme is first hinted at when Sergeant-Major Morris explains that the mysterious monkey’s paw had a curse put on it to show that one shouldn’t tempt fate. He explains that the paw has the power to grant three men three wishes. However, he goes on to share dire warnings against using the paw to wish. Despite the warnings, Mr. White makes a wish for 200 pounds. This wish is granted, but the money comes as compensation following the tragic death of his son. This reinforces the theme to be careful what you wish for by showing that getting what one wants isn’t always worth it. This theme is further developed as the story unfolds and the reader witnesses the tremendous grief and relational friction the wish has brought upon Mr. and Mrs. White. Undoubtedly, if the Whites could have known the cost of having their wish granted, they would have never wished in the first place. This again reinforces the theme that one should be careful what they wish for.
