On May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norga, his Sherpa guide, became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. After spending only about 15 minutes on the peak, they began their descent. Hillary made other expeditions to the Everest region during the early 1960s but never again tried to climb to the top. Time magazine listed him as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
